It’s been a few years since we left Hotel Mama and started the adventure of living on our own. Of course there are tons of pros about having your own place, but naturally it can also be hard at times. All of a sudden you have to worry about things like insurance, grocery shopping, cleaning, installing lamps (we still require our dad’s help on that one) and stocking a kitchen. There really are a lot of things we take for granted when we live at home, and once you’re on your own it can be quite a hassle. Something we still struggle with, even after 5 years, is a fully stocked kitchen. There are literally endless utilities, most of which are only required once per year, some that are more important and in use almost daily. Since it can be a bit overwhelming, we’ve round up some of our must-have kitchen essentials (around 200€ in total!) for your first apartment that will provide a great starter kit for the first few months. After that, we like to make use of birthdays or Christmas for adding to the collection – trust us, grandmas love gifting kitchen stuff!
Pretty Glasses (8 glasses at 3€ each)
While we would assume that you already have plates, cutlery & glasses, we still recommend getting at least 8 pretty glasses ontop. It is just so much fun to have the table set with some nice glasses, and you can even serve some vino rosso in these for your girls nights.
Tea Towels (2 for 12€)
Obviously some kitchen towels are a must for drying dishes, but why not go for some cute ones or a pop of color? We love the floral pattern of these!
Cutting Board (9€)
A good cutting board will be in use every single day, trust us! We like to have a big wooden board sitting out on the counter – not only does it look nice, but it is always on hand when you need it.
Pink Cooking Spoon (10€)
There’s no way around a cooking spoon in the kitchen, and obviously it has to be pink, right? You may want to go for a more subtle black or white if you’re moving in with your guy, but otherwise there is absolutely no reason not to have a touch of hot pink in your kitchen drawers.
Measuring Cup (6€)
Cooking, baking, mixing cocktails, … in a kitchen there is always something that needs to be measured. Be sure to have a measuring cup on hand. And for your next birthday, wish for a digital scale – we wouldn’t want to miss ours anymore!
Something Golden (10€)
Ok, so technically this golden monogram mug does not belong to the category of “essentials”, but to us, a touch of gold or a pretty cup are absolutely necessary. Simply because your morning coffee before heading off to classes or work will taste twice as good! And because it looks great on Instagram!
Pasta Strainer (4€)
Let’s face it, during college pasta is on the menu every other day. It is inexpensive and can be made in so many different ways – perfect for living on the budget! So in our opinion a pasta strainer definitely belongs into every kitchen.
Tupperware (8€)
Even after a few years of cooking experience, we still end up with left-overs after almost every meal. But if you’re busy at work or college, these are the best lunches the next day. In order to store them properly, and grab the meal on the go, tupperware is perfect.
Cookware (set of 5 for 120€ – currently on sale)
Ok, so pots and pans don’t really need any explaining when it comes to kitchen essentials. BUT we do recommend getting something of good quality right from the beginning, otherwise you’ll be re-buying new stuff every year or so and cooking is also so much easier with good quality cookware.

This is a really good post for people starting to “furnish” their kitchen! When I first left my parents house I had no idea how much I would miss just having certain things on hand…I would be like “I’m gonna cook this!” and then realize I didn’t have a whisk or something xD
The pink cooking spoon is just cuteness overload!!! =D

Super Thema! Auch ich wohne schon seit einigen Jahren in meiner eigenen Wohnung aber ab und an finde ich Sachen die mir einfach fehlen.

:-) That just took me back to when I moved out 12 years ago. Where did the time go?

I appreciate all the hard work you’re putting into this blog, gals. But this post is weak and I’ve come to expect better from you. “Pink” and “gold” and “pretty” isn’t “essentials”, and that quip about a cup looking good on Instagram?! Stocking a kitchen is actually a topic where I bet a lot of your readers would appreciate a piece of good advice but this post isn’t it.
Dear Natalie,
we’re sorry that you did not like this post. However, this is “us”. It is the way we are and we happen to like a touch of pink & gold. Of course we’re no experts on the topic of stocking a kitchen, but these really are essentials to us. Aside from the fact that we forgot to include a sharp knife in our list, we totally stand behind all of the items we posted and see them as essentials – even the gold & pink! We are girly and we write about the things that make us happy :) We hope you understand that & hopefully you’ll enjoy the next post more again.
wird zwar nicht für die erste Wohnung , aber trotzdem danke für diesen tollen Post , hab so einiges gefunden :)
and to add something : I ´m not the best cook therefore a pink cooking spoon is an essential for me :) As long it is pretty , I ´m good – I really enjoyed it
