This past year, we discovered a new cocktail that has quickly moved up to one of our top-3-list: the gin basil smash. If you’re in Vienna, be sure to order it at Motto in the 5th district – it’s the best we’ve come across so far! But since we’re not always in the mood to leave the house when we’re craving a gin basil smash, we sat down and did a bit of research on how to make our own. The outcome was surprisingly close to the original at Motto, so we thought some of you might like to also give it a go.
What you’ll need:
– 5 cl Gin (Hendrick’s is our favorite!)
– 2 cl simple syrup (super easy to make)
– 2 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice
– 1 sprig of fresh basil (approx. 10 leaves)
– a handfull of ice
– blackberries to garnish
Start by preparing your simply syrup: in a cup, mix some sugar and a bit of water, then heat it in the microwave for the sugar to melt. Next, muddle the basil vigorously to set as much flavor as possible free. Toss all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker & shake well! The drink should take on a slightly greenish color. Serve in a mason jar and garnish with some fresh basil and blackberries. This is usually also a big hit with the guys, so it would make a great pre-dinner cocktail for the next time you’re having friends over for dinner!
